Unfortunately, we also discovered other issues that needed to be addressed. The valves clearly needed some work. One of them had splits in it. How that cylinder had any compression, I will never know. Then once re removed all the valves, we discovered two exhaust valve seats (for #2 and #3) were severely pitted. The only reason these two cylinders worked at all was because the holes were filled with gunk and carbon.
Since clearly, this was turning into a bigger job than could be done in a week, we decided to pull off the remaining connecting rod caps to inspect the babbitt. Although the other cylinders are in better shape than #3, they were all showing signs of imminent failure as well.
As a minimum, the block will need hardened valve seats installed. I will also need to get the connecting rods re-babbitted. This will take time to do. In the meantime, I will have to find someone to do this work.
